We all want to look sharp in any suit we purchase, but spending loads of money for the finest quality fabric isn’t always an option. There are plenty of nice starter suits out there that can give you enough bang for your buck.
What exactly is meant by a “starter suit”, you ask? For one, they’re under $400. You can also easily find them at most any big-box retail store online. No need to break the bank or spend hours hopping between stores for one of these suits.
I’ve reviewed quite a few starter suits at this point, including offerings from brands like Kohl’s, JCPenney, and Men’s Wearhouse. Today, we’ll be taking a look at the Pronto Uomo Platinum Suit from Men’s Wearhouse.
Introducing the Pronto Uomo Platinum Suit
There are a few things you should know about the Pronto Uomo Platinum suit from Men’s Wearhouse right off the bat. Rather than being sold as a complete set, this affordable suit comes in separate pieces. You’ll choose your jacket and trousers size independently.
The price isn’t too shabby for this starter suit. The jacket ran me $194.99 and the trousers were $75, coming to a grand total of $269.99 for the set. The Pronto Uomo Platinum suit comes in three colors for you to choose from: black, charcoal, and navy shark skin. While the navy shark skin certainly looks dapper, I’d recommend going with the black or charcoal if you don’t already own many suits. The shark skin’s texture calls more attention to the suit than you might want, especially if you wear it a lot.
How Does it Fit?
This is a modern fit suit, placing it right between classic fit and slim fit. It fits closer to your body than a classic cut would without the tightness of a slim fit, giving a nice silhouette.
The pants did come unhemmed so I’ll have to tailor them to get the perfect fit, but overall these are pretty close to what you’d want in affordable suit pants. My size 42 pants were a little slimmer than expected. These would probably be a size 40 for another brand, so you might want to consider going up a size here. The legs aren’t loose fitting, which is a huge plus! It’s never fun having all that extra fabric hanging around the legs, and that’s not an issue here.
Not all jacket sleeves are made equal across brands, so I decided to try out a couple different jacket sizes. The 50 long and 52 long seemed right to give me some flexibility in case either size was off. You’ll definitely want to be specific when picking the sleeve length. Long is for any 6’ to 6’ 4” readers out there. If you’re under 6 feet, the regular length should be just fine. Extra long is also available for anyone taller than 6’ 4”.
Both of my jackets did a pretty good job, but I have to give the victory to the 50 long. While the fit was similar for the most part, the 52 long had a bit too much space in the shoulder, creating a sort of shoulder cliff.
There was hardly any difference in the amount of torso room between the jackets. A well-fitting suit should ideally have just enough room for your hand to go inside the torso of your jacket with little extra room while you’re wearing it. The Pronto Uomo did a solid job there – another high mark for this starter suit!
I’ll be honest: I’m a taller guy, so sleeves tend to run a little short for me. Many a suit has seen me run over to the tailor to get the sleeves lengthened, which I frankly can’t stand. That’s extra time and money you’re putting in just to be left with an unsightly, semi-transparent ring where the end of the sleeve used to be.
Now, everyone’s preferences are different, so this may not bother you as much, but it’s a bit of a deal breaker for me. The Men’s Wearhouse Pronto Uomo Platinum sleeves fit quite well, so I won’t have to go through all that hassle.
Overall, this affordable suit has a quality fit. It also looks great. The fabric is 100% wool, and you can absolutely tell by the look and feel. No synthetic fabric or cheap suit shine to be found here! I mean, don’t get me wrong – nobody’s going to see your Pronto Uomo suit and assume you spent thousands on it. That’s perfectly fine though. For a relatively cheap suit, this is a cut above similarly priced suits made from polyester and rayon. You also won’t have to worry about this thing falling apart on you after just a few uses because the stitching is sturdy.
What Else Should I Know?
Two things will affect the warmth of a suit while you wear it: the fabric and the lining. The fabric in the Pronto Uomo Platinum suit is all wool, which is great for letting the suit breathe and stay cool.
Most affordable suits have a fused lining, including this one. Although most suits with fused linings run warmer, the wool in this one helps counteract that effect so it doesn’t get uncomfortably warm. This is definitely still leagues ahead of a suit made of synthetic fabric that also has a fused lining.
Other notable features that come with this starter suit are:
– Side vents on the suit which allow it to breathe and look better (in my opinion)
– Standard width notched lapel
– 2 single breasted buttons in the front
– Nonfunctioning buttons on the sleeves
– 6 jacket pockets, 3 on the inside and 3 on the outside
– Button-latch button closure with a zipper to secure the trousers
Final Thoughts:
All in all, I thought the Men’s Wearhouse Pronto Uomo Platinum suit was a worthy purchase. It’s a pretty decent and affordable starter suit that doesn’t hit the wallet too hard at $269. Call it $285 in case you have to get the pants hemmed, and it’s still a sweet deal.
I’ve bought tons of suits in this price range that were much lower quality. This looks and feels really nice for the money you’re spending. If you’re in the market for an affordable suit, you can’t go wrong with this one.
